Puffer fish are usually small to medium-sized and have a number of distinctive features, such as beak-like teeth, fused jaws, and the absence of ribs and pelvic fins. These adaptations are related to their unique defence mechanism: they can quickly inflate themselves by absorbing water (or air) into their bodies. Instead of scales, they have spiny skin structures. Within the family Tetraodontidae – which includes the Mbu pufferfish – these spines are generally smaller than in related species from the Diodontidae family.
