Gorgonians, sometimes called horny corals or bark corals, consist of around 1,200 species found in all tropical and subtropical seas. Fan-shaped, their skeleton is made of a soft yet durable substance called gorgonin. Like other corals, gorgonians are typically fixed to hard substrates, but some species can be found on sandy or muddy bottoms.
