The hereford is a breed of cattle originally from southwestern England. Around the market town of Hereford in the second half of the eighteenth century, this characteristic hard and durable beef cattle developed and became so popular that it has become the most common beef cattle breed in the world. There are both horned and unhorned (polled) herefords. In the Netherlands the Hereford is mainly kept as a hobby animal or for extensive cattle breeding (c.q. grazing of nature reserves). The hereford is a powerfully built animal, with a height measured at the hip of about 135 to 150 centimeters. Herefords are characterized by a white head, the white eel stripe on the neck and withers. Otherwise, the Hereford is red-colored. The animal has natural, heavy muscling and a friendly and calm nature. Herefords calve without difficulty. The calves have a low birth weight at birth, generally between 30 and 40 kilograms. The hereford produces high-quality meat in good quantity from inexpensive roughage.
