This antique veterinary teaching model shows a calf in a cow's womb and is made of plaster. Such models were mainly used in veterinary education in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to illustrate the gestation, anatomy and position of the unborn calf.
The model shows not only the foetus, but also parts of the uterus and placenta, often depicted schematically but anatomically accurate. The use of plaster allowed for detailed modelling and made the object affordable and sturdy enough for intensive use in lectures and demonstrations.
Today, these types of models are rare and prized as historical medical objects, as they provide a tangible impression of how veterinary medicine was taught before modern imaging techniques.
