This 19th-century limestone statue comes from a church in the Leuven region of Belgium. It depicts Aaron, Moses' brother and the first high priest of the Old Testament. In ecclesiastical sculpture, this figure symbolises the priesthood and ritual tradition. What is remarkable is that the statue still shows traces of its original polychromy in the architectural niche. This painting originally gave the statue a lively and didactic appearance, in keeping with 19th-century ecclesiastical practice, in which statues played an important role in the religious experience of parishioners. The use of limestone indicates regional craftsmanship, typical of ecclesiastical sculpture in Belgium during this period. Today, the whole is presented on a metal console (45 cm), allowing the statue to be displayed in a stable and sober manner, separate from its original context, while respecting its historical and religious character.
