The sparrow owl (Surnia ulula) is a medium-sized owl. The species' scientific name was published as Strix ulula in 1758 by Carl Linnaeus.[2] The term sparrowhawk in its name refers to the shape of its wings and to its long tail, which are reminiscent of the sparrowhawk.
